Top Tips for Starting a Core Workout

Starting a new exercise program can be a daunting task. If you have found the motivation to start exercising then congrats, here are a few other tips that will help you get the most out of your new core workout routine.

Keep Breathing

If you are holding your breath when trying to perform a certain exercise it is likely that is it not the right one for you. You should be able to breathe through each exercise, otherwise you are creating unnecessary pressure in your abdomen, and may be recruiting the wrong muscles to help get you through it. If you catch yourself holding your breath, notice and try to breathe through it on the next rep. I usually advise people to breathe out (exhale) on the effortful part of the movement (for example standing up from the squat), but if that is too tricky, just try to breathe in whatever way feels most natural to you.

Go Slow

Do not rush your core exercises. Ever really, but particularly when starting out. You need to take your time to try and feel the right muscles working. Quality over quantity always. Fewer reps done properly will help you lay a good foundation, that will serve you well into the future. Rush things, and it's like skipping a step- you may be activating the wrong muscles, therefore defeating the whole purpose.

Keep it Simple

You do not need to do a whole heap of fancy/ trendy exercises to help improve your stability. Just pick a few effective exercises, and do them consistently. You don't need to reinvent the wheel every day. If you need help with what exercises to start with, check out our online programs- they will give you plenty of ideas.

Most importantly, do what feels right for your body, things can be hard, but they should not cause you pain or strain.

Have fun!
