Why is Balance Training important?

Most people probably know that as you get older you should probably be including some regular balance training into your life. But its good for you young folks to practice a bit too! So here are a few quick reasons why I think we should all be doing some activities that challenge our balance regularly.

Prevention is better than cure

We've all heard this, so I know I am stating the obvious, but balance training can help prevent falls and injuries. The evidence is pretty clear that in some populations, challenging your balance through appropriate exercises can help reduce the risk of falls, and subsequent injuries. I would suggest that it makes sense for people of any age: if you are steadier, more stable, coordinated and stronger, you will reduce the risk of many injuries and falls.

It can help improve your core stability and posture

Often balance exercises will involve using the muscles that help support your core and posture too. So, it can help you move better, and feel more supported in your day to day activities.

Quality of Life

If you are at less risk of falling or injury, your feel more confident right? You might avoid less activities, feel stronger and stable enough to say yes to more. This in turn gives you more confidence and stability.....you see where I'm going with this? Positive cycle right there! This is thought to be particularly relevant in aging populations, or in those with conditions that have impacted their balance significantly. I think this could be applicable to all of us.

So, how do you start including some balance training in your week?

It's not a one size fits all, everyone will be at different stages. Some people will find standing on one leg really difficult, other people will need to work on more dynamic movements to challenge their balance. If you have any particular concerns with your balance, you should get in touch with your local health professional/ physiotherapist, so they can assess your individual needs, and develop a specific program for you. There are often lots of great group community exercise sessions that are run by Physio's or Exercise Physiologists, aimed at people with Parkinson's, Osteoporosis, or other conditions, that you could look into around your local area. I also have a free beginner challenge, or a paid 5 week Beginner Balance Program that you could check out if you are interested.

Give it a go and Enjoy!
